Xibron's Newcomers' Guide

This is a rewrite of Xibron's original guide, posted 5 years ago over at the old TKoK forums.

Lately, a lot of new players have appeared here at our TKoK community and since TKoK is a complex game, all of them are completely clueless where and how they should begin their journey. And since there are and always will be such players, I've decided to create this guide.

I. General info

There are 4 diffuculty modes: Normal, Legendary, Heartcore, Empowered Heartcore, and Nightmare.

  • You should obviously start with Normal. It's the mode where you go for Game Progress, to level up and to learn the boss fights.
  • When you have the necessary Game Progress, your level is good enough and you know for sure you can survive the fight and kill a boss, try Legendary mode. This is the mode you choose for items, but you also lose gold and EXP when dying, so you gotta be sure you can survive the run.
  • When you and your team start killing that boss fast, with ease and without deaths, you might try Heartcore mode, where you have a bigger chance of getting the item you need. Be warned though, death is permament there and if you die during a boss fight, boss does not become weaker and you leave your team with much harder battle.
  • Empowered Heartcore should only be played on if you require something specific from it. Generally, it's only useful later on in the game (Level 45+).
  • Nightmare mode is a whole other can of worms, with the difficulty for every boss cranked way up. You should only do Nightmare if you are 100% certain you are prepared or want to make use of the higher EXP limit. As a rule of thumb, for any given Nightmare boss you should be 22 levels above the boss you are facing to have a chance of success.

As you should've already noticed, the further you get, the more challenging TKoK becomes. As of now, TKoK community divides these challenges into several areas:

  • Everything up to Karrix (Lvls 1-22)
  • Ancient Orc Tomb aka AOT (Lvls 22-27)
  • Vjaier, Crueltis, Tal'Navi aka VJ/Cru/TN (Lvls 27-32)
  • Ruined Temple aka RT (Lvls 32-39)
  • Inner Temple aka IT (Lvls 39-45)
  • Ommog Zone (Lvls 45-50)
While you can ignore the yellow and epic drops of first area, starting with Karrix you should get all the needed yellows and epics of the area you are currently in before moving further on, otherwise the bosses of next area will demolish you. If 'you' do manage to kill bosses of an area higher than yours though, it simply means you are leeching and you are being boosted, a feat definitely not worth aiming for.

Here's a list of Game Progresses with an explanation on how to acquire them:

  • 0 - gained by default
  • 1 - gained by entering Vormur and finishing quest "Restoring the Portal", unlocks teleport to Vormur
  • 2 - gained by killing Broodmother and finishing quest "Proving Your Worth", unlocks teleport to Vormur Gardens
  • 3 - gained by killing Narith and finishing quest given by High Priest of Vormur, unlocks teleport to Tol'Calm Front Gates
  • 4 - gained by killing Sand Golem and finishing Trials, unlocks teleport to Grom'Gol
  • 5 - gained by killing Karrix and entering AOT, unlocks teleport to AOT
  • 6 - gained by killing Karavnos, unlocks warping to AOT wings and warping to Naztar
  • 7 - gained by killing Muarki, unlocks VJ quest and warping to Karavnos
  • 8 - gained by killing Tal'Navi, unlocks teleport to RT and warping to Crueltis
  • 9 - gained by killing Ancient Hydra and finishing quest "Traversing the Depths", unlocks warping to M'karsa
  • 10 - gained by killing Crypt Fiend, unlocks teleport to Inner Temple
  • 11 - gained by killing Ghoul, unlocks warping to Crypt Fiend
  • 12 - gained by killing The Twins, unlocks warping to Ghoul
  • 13 - gained by completing Emerith's Puzzles, unlocks teleport to Emerith
  • 14-17 - gained by killing the minibosses in Ommog Tower, these do not unlock anything but increase your gold cap
  • 18 - gained by killing Talus, unlocks teleport to Ommog

And here is a short description of areas and their bosses:

  • Everything up to Karrix: Game Progresses 1 to 4, bosses are Broodmother, Narith, Sand Golem, Naztar and Karrix
  • AOT: Game Progresses 5 to 7, bosses are Avnos, Karnos, Karavnos and Muarki
  • VJ/Cru/TN: Game Progress 8, bosses are Vjaier, Crueltis and Tal'navi
  • RT: Game Progress 9, bosses are M'karsa, Ancient Hydra, and Ortakna (optional boss)
  • IT: Game Progresses 10 to 12, bosses are Crypt Fiend, Ghoul, The Twins, and Zanatath (optional boss)
  • Ommog Zone: Game Progresses 13+, bosses are Parvin, Villard, Arkham, Arturia, and Talus

General tips:

  1. Remember, knowing the fight and knowing what YOU have to do in that fight are two different things. You can know the fight perfectly and still suck, because you don't do your part of the fight.
  2. The general rule about DPS roles is: melee DPS focus boss and ranged DPS attack boss, but if only any additional mob appears, it's rangeds job to deal with it. If rangeds can't kill it alone, melees must help too.
  3. The last thing you want is any mob attacking your healer. Whatever it is, kill it *immediately*.
  4. Another very (very VERY) important thing to remember is: in 95% of all TKoK boss fights, minis are MORE important than the boss.

III. Items lists

I will only signal you a path which you should take, by showing you items you should get for your hero, but only up to a certain boss. I will also point out the stats you should be aiming for as your hero. After that though, you're back on your own. However, after 'completing' this guide you should be experienced enough to know what to do. Still, finding out which items, stats and talents combinations (and in what situations) work the best for you and for your class is still up to you.

In TKoK, there are 4 qualities of items: magical (blue), enchanted (yellow), epic (purple), and relic (orange). You should already be familiar with blues and have seen a few yellows. Yellow items drop out of bosses (don't confuse bosses with mini-bosses though). Epic items drop only if you kill a boss in VX mode. Relic items drop only if you kill bosses in Nightmare difficulty and in Ultra VX mode.

You can also boot up the game in Novice Test mode, which gives you a decent idea of what gear to aim for. Novice Test mode does have some inaccuracies though (SP shoulders on barb...).
